Sound of Rum was formed by poet Kate (Excentral) Tempest just under a year ago with drummer Ferry Lawrenson and guitarist/bassist/loop-pedalist Archie Marsh. They’ve just recorded their debut album Balance and have done their first live session on BBC6 music.
With Sound of Rum, and as a rapper and poet, Kate has found the perfect vehicle to explore the common ground between music and spoken word. Of her, Scroobius Pip says “She has no right whatsoever to be as good as she is. It astounds me. Her writing is epic, her delivery piercing, and with the addition of her band Sound of Rum her potential is realised. Inspirational.”
Sound of Rum have been commissioned by Phrased and Confused to create a new extended piece of spoken word, rap and music for Summer Sundae 2009, which will tell the story of three different people, and highlight universal truths and patterns in the way life unfolds.
