Whilst Sifundo and her 15-year old son Jamal Msebele are both established and award-winning writers and performers in their own right, a commission from Phrased & Confused sees them collaborating for the first time on a new work for this year’s Summer Sundae.
In Generation X/Y, MC Jamal and poet Sifundo explore their experiences of being teenagers, responding to the things they don’t understand about each other using traditional poetry, slam-poetry, MCing and music.
Sifundo has just finished touring ‘What Wonder Woman Taught Me’ with her collective Thea-poets. Hers work appears in several anthologies including ‘A Storm Between Fingers’, ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’ and London Poetry Slam. As a poet coach for London Teenage Poetry Slam for 5 years she has worked alongside the best of UK and US Slam poets.
Jamal’s latest and up and coming gigs include the Roundhouse, Barbican and Southbank. Described by BBC radio presenter Libby Purves as a future poet laureate, Jamal’s first book was published at the age of 13 and he is now working on his first mix-tape (all whilst sitting his GCSEs!)
